Chapter 7

I eventually made it up the stairs and when I reached the top another wave of exhaustion gripped me as I yawned widely. I was tired, so tired now that I had to sleep. I had hardly drunk any of the tequila as I sat down on the ground floor hallway and curled up there and then.

I awoke a little unsure of what had happened, and I looked at the hallway clock. It was now 2.13pm, I had slept for hours and I didn’t feel any better for it.

Clearly, I had exerted myself a little too much.

After a moment or two I gathered my wits and got up off the floor. I paused and remembered what I had done and what I was supposed to be doing next.

My first task was to head back downstairs, get my phone and see if anything had changed. Thankfully when I went downstairs I could see the Shuck was gone with just broken bits on the floor for now. Something I would properly sort another time.

Instead, for now, all I did was walk into the room and close the door behind me. I then reached out to sense any ambient magic in the room. Paranoia again but it was all as expected given what I had done.

Then, satisfied that it felt safe I walked to the far end of the room and blew gently, releasing a short sharp gust of wind increased by my magic. The purpose of this was to push any debris caught in my summoning circle out of it and to the far end of the room.

I did this again, to be sure and when I could see the small bits gathering at the door side of the room I felt pleased enough that the Shuck was gone and my brass circle and the summoning chamber was ready to be used again, even at short notice.

Now, with that all tied up I went back in my basement bedroom and got my phone. Then, up to the kitchen while powering on the phone.

I put the kettle on as I needed a coffee, super-hot and black as night was the order of the day. There are just times where honey tea isn’t going to cut it.

As my phone powered up and found it’s settings there was the beep of a message, a text from Amanda…” Yes.” I cried out as I hurried to read the message:

Hi Eddie, on a job and can’t speak much. Hope you are ok, will call when I can.

Amanda :)

I smashed my hand down on the worktop, damn!

Quickly I went to call her back, the phone rang again and again and just when I thought I would get sent to voicemail, she answered.

“Eddie, I’ve got to be quick.” she said in a hushed voice.

“Amanda, just listen. Your Turkish friend Aisha came after me, she was and is behind the tideborn and it is the same guy. He’s out of action though but she is still out and looking for me.
